Exercise and youth work

The providers of municipal health and sports services co-operate actively within the municipality and also with other sectors and organisations across municipal boundaries. As a result, Finland boasts an extensive network of facilities for everyday exercise and sports, based on municipally provided services.
There are around 30,000 different sports facilities in Finland, the majority of which are owned and maintained by local authorities.

Municipal sports services promote an active and healthy life style. The sports services help create pleasant surroundings by providing green spaces and outdoor areas available for all, and a network of pedestrian and bicycle traffic routes. The objective is to improve the health and well-being of residents in all age groups. Basic sports services are mainly financed by local authorities.

Municipal youth work and policy are conducted in collaboration between different professionals. Youth facilities, camps and other leisure activities, workshops for those requiring special support, and various groups and channels for influence and participation are available for the young.

Youth administration traditionally collaborates with the municipal educational and social administration and labour market authorities, and with non-governmental organisations in various partnership projects. For example, prevention of social exclusion, multicultural youth work and influential youth groups are increasingly supported by networks formed by various authorities and civic activity. Regional collaboration is used to support youth involvement and youth communication.
