The European elections and Finland’s Presidency of the Council of the EU 2019

The Association of Finnish Local and Regional Authorities has published a programme for the European elections 2019 and its goals for Finland’s Presidency of the Council of the EU.

Finland will hold the Council Presidency during the latter half of 2019. The priorities for the Finnish Presidency will be decided once a new government is in place after the parliamentary elections held on 14 April. The priorities are scheduled to be published in late June.

The Association’s goals for Finland’s Presidency highlight the importance of the forthcoming EU programming period 2021–2027 for municipalities and regions. The Association also focuses on the following themes:

* climate policy, circular economy and energy policy

* urbanisation

* gender equality and non-discrimination

* promotion of wellbeing and prevention of social exclusion

* digital transformation

* immigration

* education policy and foreign language proficiency

These same themes are brought into focus in the Association’s programme for the European elections.
